My little sister Katy Anne is such a wonderful part of my life.  She is constantly sweet, patient, and ready to help someone.  She is involved in many activities, such as piano, karate, and gymnastics.  Another large part of her life is being outdoors.  She often goes for walks in the woods and explores.  I purposely photographed her in a skirt and rain boots.  When my mom once asked her why she was outside in a skirt and cape, to which she replied, "It's more magical this way".  Her rain boots help to show her carefree, adventurous nature, and she is always prepared for anything.  Katy Anne loves all animals, but elephants are her favorite.  She has amassed a large collection, which she keeps tidy at all times.  She also adores our cat, Nutmeg.  I photographed her in her pajamas because I love how cute they are.  I often see her and Mark (my younger brother) running around in their pajamas before bed.  One of my favorite things to do when I have free time is braid her hair.  Her hair is thick and straight so I can absent-mindedly experiment different braids on her.  In the photograph with existing light, she was reading.  She loves to read, and is currently reading Peter Pan, which was one of my favorite books as a child.  I also like the lighting best in this picture, because I personally favor existing light.  I tried to pick settings with an ample amount of light though, because Katy Anne has a scintillating personality.  She is incredibly cheerful, however, she is also calm and thoughtful.  Often, she will will sit somewhere and simply think.  She isn't chatty, however, what she says is worth listening to.  As a result, in her portraits I tried to show both sides of her.  This unit has showed me a lot about how the lighting of a photograph can change the mood of a picture.  I know now that artificial light makes the subject look more dramatic, and this is why I love the lighting in the last picture.  I feel that the dramatic effect of the lighting emphasizes the seriousness of Katy Anne's attitude towards music.  And if I use more natural light, then the subject will look more natural.  Since I am an optimistic person as well, I usually like to photograph with more light.

  1. The initial feeling I get from Sarah’s collection is that her subject is a very loving and happy person. She seems to be younger but more mature for her age. The pictures seem to document things that the subject likes and that are important to her. I can tell that she is playful and lighthearted from the pictures with the stuffed animals and with the cat, but also that she is mature and dedicated from the pictures of her at the piano and outside. The photographs are also mostly in color, suggesting that it is important to the subject. Just from looking at the photos, I think the most successful ones are the ones with the braid and in the woods. The one with the braid makes excellent use of lighting and creates a cool effect with the light focused on her hair. This suggests that the subject likes to be creative, whether its with or hair or other ways. The natural lighting in the picture shot in the woods gives the photo a more organic feel, and the photographer makes good use of leading lines.

After reading the description of Katy Anne, it seems as though the photographs did their job in portraying her, as I was able to draw similar conclusions. I thinks Sarah made excellent use of environment, props, composition, and lighting. The brighter lighting gives me a positive image of Katy Anne, and from the pictures and the description I feel like she is someone I would like to meet.

    Good Job Sarah!

  2. I feel like your model is a happy person because she has a really pretty smile and she is really pretty. I like how in the first picture, the colors are really bright and how the next picture is black and white. It shows a lot of variety in what kind of pictures you can take. I also get the feeling that the model likes animals. In 2 of the pictures, she has some sort of animal with her. My favorite picture is the forth one. I love how you incorporated the background with the photo. I think you did really well at taking photos at capturing the models personality and inner beauty. I also really like how you included the composition unit into this project. I see you used the birds eye view. I think you could maybe you could include more in the photo. The last picture looks like she’s playing the piano but you cropped it too tight that you can’t really notice.

  3. Your sister, Katy Anne shows a lot of talent, curiosity, and positive personality in your photos. Katy Anne seems like a caring and loving sister who also enjoys the love of animal such as the cat she is holding in her hand. The one photo show of a picture her playing the piano, which show me that she is very talented. She looks very curious exploring the woods and the life around her. In all your photos Katy Anne looks very positive toward anything she comes across, whether she is exploring the woods, or hitting a hard note on the piano. You really did a great job with the hard light and showing your sister’s positive attitude. In have a suggestion for next time; incorporate more composition in you photos. You have really good photos.
