This may have been one of my favorite units.  I found it incredibly challenging, but I love blending pictures together.  I think that I liked it much better than when we focused on creating visual effects with the camera.  Probably because I love drawing and painting and this type of photography is more similar to 2D art.  I loved just putting multiple pictures or textures together to make an unrealistic looking picture.  I found that trying to understand and remember the directions given in class was the hardest part, so that even when I tried to go down to work on pictures in study halls, I had trouble understanding what to do.  My favorite piece was probably the song lyric project.  The only thing that I wished I could have done was put a sort of rain texture over the whole picture, but I tried that and it didn't work so well.  Maybe I should have tried using rain on a car window.  I can always try at home.  Thank you for a fun year!

Motion Final

 Blurred Motion

Writing with Light

Chrono

Kendra and I worked together in a group during class, but we worked separately for the projects.  I like the idea of capturing motion and in a picture, but I have to be honest, I like having a clear and focused picture.  Therefore my favorite type of motion picture is the frozen motion.  But I also thought the writing with light was really cool.  Zooming was probably the hardest and I had to take many pictures to work out the lighting and timing.  I learned how to create a good kind of blur, and it does look really cool.  Panning was also really difficult, and it took many trials and errors to get it to come out right.  Kendra and Frances really helped me figure out the technique.  I think that Chrono is probably the most fun.  Trying to capture motion in Chrono is particularly hard, so I just had a stationary subject.  I purposely made it so that you would not see her face in the picture.  I have been having a bit of trouble expressing myself and communicating, so I wanted to show people how easy it is for someone to hide in plain view.  She is easily visible, but her emotions are unreadable.

Motion Planning

I really like the idea of taking a picture of one of my family members riding a bike, because my family often enjoys riding bikes together.  We are usually pretty active, and I consider myself athletic, even though health problems kept me from participating in sports this year.  I think I will try the rule of thirds or a worm's eye view.  I am thinking of a shutter speed of .8 seconds with an ISO of 100 because the shot will be taken outside.  The aperture will probably end up being pretty high.

I want to take a picture of my little sister or a friend running track because that used to be a large part of my life, and I still love to run.  I will probably try to get a shutter speed of 1 second, and an 100 ISO because I will be outside.  As a result I am guessing that my aperture will be close to its maximum value.  Unfortunately, I think my subject will end up in the middle of the photograph.

I already have a frozen motion picture of a flag using the rule of thirds.  However, if I had to do it again, or try something else.  I would take a picture of my brother doing karate.  This goes along with my (sort of ) theme of sports so I may follow through with the idea.  My shutter speed would be really fast, maybe 1/300.  As a result, my ISO will be higher, but I would still prefer my brother was outside, so I think an ISO around 800 would be good.  I will attempt to use the bird's eye view perspective.

I also already have a zoomed picture; it's flowers on a tree.  And while it looks cool, I'm beginning to really like the idea of having a unified theme (of sports).  So I was thinking of attempting of possibly zooming a sports logo, or something stationary that represents sports, like a soccer ball or football.  I want a shutter speed of 1 second.  The ISO will be fairly low, maybe 100 because I still want natural light.  I think I want all of my shots to be in natural light.  The aperture will be close to maximum.

I couldn't find a picture to really capture what I want, but I'm having a little trouble incorporating sports with light.  What I'm thinking now, is that maybe I could weave glow sticks into badminton rackets (an intense family summer sport) and then have my family play in the late evening, which is when we usually play anyway. I will need a really extended shutter speed, I'm thinking 30 seconds.  The ISO maybe around 800 or possibly 400 and I really have no clue where the aperture will be.

Writing with Light Group Experiment

Kendra Sober, Frances Recibe, Sarah Chambers

I really loved trying this new style of photography.  My favorite were the ones where we incorporated the glow sticks because I loved all the glow sticks.  I think next time I would have a slightly shorter shutter speed.  Our ISO was 400, Aperture was 4.5, and our shutter speed was Bulb.

My little sister Katy Anne is such a wonderful part of my life.  She is constantly sweet, patient, and ready to help someone.  She is involved in many activities, such as piano, karate, and gymnastics.  Another large part of her life is being outdoors.  She often goes for walks in the woods and explores.  I purposely photographed her in a skirt and rain boots.  When my mom once asked her why she was outside in a skirt and cape, to which she replied, "It's more magical this way".  Her rain boots help to show her carefree, adventurous nature, and she is always prepared for anything.  Katy Anne loves all animals, but elephants are her favorite.  She has amassed a large collection, which she keeps tidy at all times.  She also adores our cat, Nutmeg.  I photographed her in her pajamas because I love how cute they are.  I often see her and Mark (my younger brother) running around in their pajamas before bed.  One of my favorite things to do when I have free time is braid her hair.  Her hair is thick and straight so I can absent-mindedly experiment different braids on her.  In the photograph with existing light, she was reading.  She loves to read, and is currently reading Peter Pan, which was one of my favorite books as a child.  I also like the lighting best in this picture, because I personally favor existing light.  I tried to pick settings with an ample amount of light though, because Katy Anne has a scintillating personality.  She is incredibly cheerful, however, she is also calm and thoughtful.  Often, she will will sit somewhere and simply think.  She isn't chatty, however, what she says is worth listening to.  As a result, in her portraits I tried to show both sides of her.  This unit has showed me a lot about how the lighting of a photograph can change the mood of a picture.  I know now that artificial light makes the subject look more dramatic, and this is why I love the lighting in the last picture.  I feel that the dramatic effect of the lighting emphasizes the seriousness of Katy Anne's attitude towards music.  And if I use more natural light, then the subject will look more natural.  Since I am an optimistic person as well, I usually like to photograph with more light.

Silhouettes

I love this style of photography so much.  I much prefer it to taking portrait shots.  I've never really been talented with technology or photoshop so it was really nice to be able to learn something new like this.  I loved learning how to use the layers.  I had no idea that this kind of editing was possible on a regular computer, let alone that I could learn how to do it.  However, I was pleasantly surprised by the outcomes.  I wasn't a huge fan of the solid or patterned backgrounds, and my favorite is the custom shape one.

I learned how different sources of light and different kinds of light can make people look different.  I personally like the more natural light, but my favorite is probably existing or shade because not only does it look natural but it is softer and more flattering than direct sunlight.  I wish that we could have taken more pictures with the softer kind of light.  My suggestion is to have a partner who is willing to make different expressions.  I took some pictures with my friends in the morning, but it was in the beginning so I did them wrong and couldn't use them.  However, their facial expressions were much more interesting since they were comfortable with me.
